Acceptable Use Policy

This policy forms part of the Terms of Service, agreeing to those agrees to this, and it applies to every link, page, name and label you create. Where the two overlap they say the same thing; if they ever did not, the Terms govern.
The reason this is strict
Every memo.link user shares one domain. If memo.link is flagged by Google Safe Browsing, every user's links show a browser warning at the same moment, including ones already printed on bags, posters and business cards, which cannot be recalled or corrected.
One abusive link damages people who have never met the person who created it. That is why the rules below are enforced firmly rather than negotiated.
Never
- Phishing, pages impersonating a login, a bank, a delivery service, a government form
- Malware, anything that installs, exploits, or compromises
- Child sexual abuse material, removed immediately and reported to the authorities
- Impersonation, names or pages presenting as a person or organisation you are not
- Fraud, fake shops, advance-fee schemes, counterfeit goods
- Doxxing or harassment, publishing someone's private information, or targeting an individual
Not allowed
- Spam, or links distributed by unsolicited bulk message
- Automated bulk creation of links
- Circumventing rate limits, or scripted probing of addresses
- Deliberately misleading labels, a card reading "Photo album" that leads somewhere else
- Content unlawful in your country or ours
Checked when you save
Every destination is checked against Google Safe Browsing when you save it, and again whenever somebody is shown it, whether that is a link opening or a card on your page, because a page that was fine when you saved it can change afterwards. If a destination is flagged later, visitors see a warning in its place, your link is not deleted, and we email you saying what was flagged and how to tell us we are wrong.
A save can be refused for two different reasons, and they are not the same:
- The link is flagged. Google considers it unsafe. If you think that is wrong, tell us, false positives happen and we would rather hear about them than have you work around them.
- The check could not run. Our checker was unreachable or over quota. Nothing is wrong with your link; wait a moment and save again. We refuse rather than wave links through while the check is down, because that is exactly when someone would try.
The limits
There is no cap on how many links you keep. There is a cap on how fast you create them, a couple of hundred a day, and on how many sign-in codes can be requested for one address in an hour. Neither is reachable by using the product normally; both exist to make bulk abuse expensive.
What happens if you break these rules

We tell you what was removed and why, by email, naming the address and the rule, and you can contest it by replying to that message. A suspended link returns a neutral "no longer available" page; we never publish what was reported or by whom.
If we need to reclaim a name rather than suspend a link, you get 14 days' notice by email first, unless it is being used for fraud or something illegal. A name may already be printed on something, which is why it is not taken without warning.
Reporting
Every public page has a report link. It opens a form at memo.link/report, which you can also reach directly and where you can paste any memo.link address, or the address of the page a memo.link sent you to, if that is all you have. Please check what you send us; we can only act on an address that works.
You can also write to abuse@admin-memo.link. Reports are read by a person, not a filter.
Reporting in bad faith is itself a violation. Mass-reporting a competitor, or filing reports you know to be false, is a misuse of a mechanism that exists to keep people safe, and it is treated the same way as any other abuse of the service.
Two things to know before you write one. We do not record who you are, reports are anonymous. But what you write is shown to the person you are reporting, both when we explain why something was removed and if they later download their data. So describe the content, and leave out personal details about yourself or anyone else. If you name someone in the text, they will see it.
